英会話表現集 い

言わせてもらえば

If you ask me. I think it's true.
---私の意見を言わせてもらえば、それは正しいと思う。

生きるために

What does he do for a living?
---(生きるために/生活していくのに)彼はなんのしごとをしているの?
★ for living で生きていくためにとなります。

言い寄る

He made a pass at her. ---彼は彼女に言い寄った。
Did he make a pass at you?
---彼あなたにモーションかけてきた?
★ (異性)に言い寄る、ナンパする、口説く、ちょっかいを出す、声をかけるなどに使えます。

一部始終

He knows (all) the ins and outs of the stock market.
---彼は株式市場の一部始終をしている。
★ all the ins and outs of ですべての中も外もという感じですね。

いくらですか

How much is it?
---それいくらですか?
How much for the book?
---その本はいくらですか?
How much by the pound?
---1ポンドでいくらですか?
What's the fare?
---運賃はおいくらですか?
How much will it cost?
---おいくらぐらいかかりますか?
How much did you get it for?
---それいくらでかったの?
What does it come to?
---全部でおいくらになりますか?

---(サービスに対して)おいくらですか?

急がないと

We should get a move on. We are late for school.
---急がないと。学校に遅れてる。
★ ちょっと単語別に分析してみましょう。
move は「動く」on は「その動作を続ける」get は「その状態になる」
つまり、動き続ける状態になる⇒急がないとになります。get going でも同じ表現になります。
We have to get going. See you.
---そろそろ帰らないと。じゃーまた。

一生懸命

He worked his fingers to the bone.
---彼は一生懸命に働いた。
★ 指が骨になるぐらい働いたわけですね。
He worked as hard as he could.
---彼は一生懸命に働いた。
★ 一生懸命には、as ~ as one can でいろいろ表現できます。
She runs as fast as she can.
She did it as well as she could

言うほど簡単

That's sounds good!
But, I don't think it would be as easy as it sounds.
---いい感じだね。
---しかし、言うほど簡単ではないと思うよ。

一致

We agreed on this point.
---我々はこの点では完全に一致した。
Your idea fits in well with mine.
---君のアイデアは私のとうまく一致している。
This is the consensus (of opinion) of the company.
---これは会社の一致した見解です。
A community of interest united them.
---彼らは利害関係の一致で結びついいていた。
★ Interest は「興味がある」で良く知られていますが、「金利」「利害」の意味でも良く使われますので覚えておいてください。
We should deal with that problem as a unified group.
---我々はその問題に一丸となって取り組まなければならない。
I've seen him somewhere, but I can't put a name to the face.
---見たことあるんんだけど、顔と名前が一致しない。
★ put A to B で「AをBと一致させる」になります。あと put を使ったおもしろい言い回しに、I put work before family. (私は家族より仕事をとる。)なんて言い方もあります。

痛い・痛み

I have pain in my stomach.
I have a stomachache.
My stomach hurts.
---おなかが痛い。
★ 痛いという言い方には、I have a pain in my~ My ~ hurts. I have an ~ache. などがあります。
I have an ~ache. の文には痛む場所と ache でその場所の痛みを表す名詞ができますのでそれを使います。
headache(頭痛)stomachache(腹痛)toothache(歯痛)backache(腰痛)earache(耳痛)など。
★ 痛みという意味の名詞では、pain がもっとも一般的です。そのほか ache は部分的な痛み、pang は激痛、twing は急激な刺すような痛み、smart はずきずきする痛みなどです。
pain(痛み)を修飾する言い方として、throbbing pain(ずきずきする痛み)dull pain(鈍痛)stinging pain(刺すような痛み)などがあります。

I have a splitting headache.
My head is splitting.
My head is killing me.
---頭が割れそうに痛い(痛くてしかたがない)。
I have a sore throat.
---のどが痛い。
★ この場合の sore は炎症して痛い時に使用します。
I have pain all over.
---体中が痛い。

言うまでもなく

Without saying that Stanford is one of the most prominent universities in the U.S.
---言うまでもなく、スタンフォードはアメリカの大きな大学の一つです。
★ Without saying that(言うまでもなく)
He never came again.
---言うまでもなく、彼は二度と来なかった。
★ Needless to say(言うまでもなく)
She knows English, to say nothing of Japanese.
---彼女は日本語は言うまでもなく、英語も知っていいる。
★ to say nothing of(言うまでもなく)
この3点ほど覚えておけばまず困りません。

いかがですか

What do you say to a glass of wine?
---ワインを一杯いかがですか?
Won't you have a cup of tea?
---紅茶を一杯いかがですか?
How about going for a walk?
---散歩でもいかがですか?
Why don't you take your coat off?
---コートをお脱ぎになってはいかがですか?
★ どれも相手に何かを提案/促す表現ですが、間違えやすいのがWhat do you say to/How aboutの後の動詞の扱いです。
これらの言い回しの後には名詞が来ますので、動詞をしようする場合には必ずing形(動名詞)にして使わないといけません。
同じような間違いでよくあるのが、I'm looking forward to~です。このあとも必ず動詞はing形(動名詞)でないといけません。

How are you getting along?
---ご機嫌いかがですか?
How do you feel [are you feeling] today?
---今日はご気分はいかがですか?
How's everything?
---調子はいかがですか?
How are you doing?
---いかがお過ごしでしたか?
What shall I do with this?
---これはいかがしたらよろしいでしょう?
How's your business trip?
---出張はいかがでしたか?

言いづらいんだけど

No offense, but your feet smell.
---言いづらいんだけど、足くさいよ。
I'm sorry if this offends you, but you made a big mistake.
---言いづらいんだけど、君は大きな間違えをしているよ。
★ No offense/I'm sorry if this offends you, butは相手に気分を害してほしくないけど、言っておいた方が相手のためになるのであえて言う場合にしようします。
I hesitate to say that, but your skirt rolls up behind.
---言いづらいんだけど、君のスカード後ろで捲くれてるよ。

いらいらする

Her foolish behavior irritated me.
---彼女のばかな行動にはいらいらする。
I was impatient at his delay.
---かれの遅いのには、ほんといらいらする。
Don't be impatient with the children.
---こどもにいらいらしちゃだめだよ。
I must confess that your tuneless singing got on my nerves.
---君の調子外れの歌声には正直いらいらした。
That noise annoyed me a lot.
---あの雑音はほんとイライラする。
That screeching noise gets on my nerves.
あのキーキーという音には本当にいらいらする。
He rubs me the wrong way.
---彼は私の気持ちを逆なでする。

今か今かと待ち切れない

The children are raring to go play
---子供たちは遊びに行くのが今か今かと待ちきれない。
I’m raring to go!
---私は行きたくてうずうずしている。
I’m sure you’ll be raring to go!
---もう行きたくて行きたくて待ち切れないだね。
「raring」は自動詞rear(up)「(馬などが)後ろ足で立つ」の現在進行形から来ています。

一応

「一応」と似た表現に、「ある程度」「とりあえず」などがあります。
日本語でも良く使い表現ですので、英語でも覚えておきましょう。

「大体・ある程度」という時の「一応」

Somewhat

This restaurant was somewhat delicious.
---このレストランは一応おいしかった。
Tom was somewhat chubbier than his younger brother.
---トムは弟よりちょっと太ってるね。
He looked somewhat excited.
---彼はある程度興奮してたね。
Do you cook? – Somewhat.
---料理はするの。 まあね。
We were somewhat surprised at her strange question.
---私たちは彼女の奇妙な質問にちょっと驚いた。
The cancer cells look somewhat different from normal cells.
---がん細胞は正常細胞と少し違って見えます。

to some extent

Her opinion is right to some extent.
---彼女の意見はある程度正しい。
The rumor is true to some extent.
---その噂はある程度正しい。
I agree with him to some extent.
--私はある程度彼に賛成です。

kind of

He is kind of shy.
彼はシャイな方ね。
It's kind of hot out here.
---ここはちょっと熱いね。
I kind of like Japanese food.
---日本食は好きな方かな。

「さしあたって」「とりあえず」の意味の「一応」

for now

I'm fine for now.
---今の所大丈夫です。
Let’s leave her alone for now.
---今のところ彼女は一人にしておこう。
Only for now.
---今だけ。
Let's go with that for now.
---いまのところそうしておきましょう。

for the time being

Let's stay here for the time being.
---しばらくここに滞在しましょう。
The money will do for the time being.
---しばらくはお金は大丈夫だろう。
This will do for the time being.
---当分はこれで間に合う。

tentatively

This meeting is tentatively planned on May 1st.
---この会議は算定的に5月1日に計画されています。
It’s tentatively planned for Jun 3rd.
---一応、6月3日をしています。
The tentative budget for 2020 has been decided.
---2020の暫定予算が決まった。

「念のために」の「一応」

just in case

We should prepare this just in case.
---念のためにこれを用意しておこう。
I take this drink just in case.
---念のためにこの飲み物を持っていく。
Let's leave earlier just in case.
---念のために早めに出ていこう。
I'll take an umbrella just in case.
---念のために傘を持っていこう。
♠濡れてはいけないので。

just to be on the safe side

「to be safe」や「just to be safe」と略すことが多いです。

I'll take an umbrella to be on the safe side.
---念のために傘を持っていこう。
♠「just in case」との違いは、雨が降って大事な服を濡らしたくないなどの意味が含まれます。
You should see a doctor just to be on the safe side.
---念のためにお医者さんに診てもらった方がいいよ。

just to be sure

Could you email me just to be sure?
---念のために電話頂戴ね?
Just to be safe, I’m going to bring extra money.
---念のために、もう少しお金を持っていくよ。
♠「juat in case 」と違いはありません。
