叫ぶ

She called out for help.
---彼女は助けてt叫んだ。
He yelled at the other driver.
---彼は他のドライバーに叫んだ。
She shouted at him, not to do that.
---彼女はそんな事をするなと彼に叫んだ。
The kids were screaming with excitement.
---子供は興奮して叫んだ。
The boy cried out in pain.
---少年は痛みに叫んだ。
♠ 叫ぶという意味でもっとも一般的なものは shout で、大声で叫ぶと言う意味では call out 、喜怒哀楽などで泣き叫ぶのが cry out 、スポーツ観戦などで叫ぶのは yell 、女性や子供が金切り声だすのが scream です。

雑踏

I like the hustle and bustle of a big city.
---私は都会の雑踏が好きだ。
♠ hustle 騒ぎ・押し合い bustle 大騒ぎ・大騒動
どちらもスペルが似ていて意味も同様ですので一緒に覚えましょう。T は発音しませんが忘れずに。

催眠術

He put her under hypnosis.
He hypnotized her.
---彼は彼女を催眠術に掛けた。
She is under hypnosis.
---彼女は催眠状態にある。
♠ 催眠術師は、hypnotist.

さらに

Let's try again.
---さらに試しましょう。
You should make another attempt.
---さらに試みた方がいい。
To make matters worse, rain began to fall.
さらに悪いことに、雨が降り出した。
♠ what is worse=to make matters worse
Things are getting worse and worse.
---自体はさらに悪化している。

最後の手段

As a last resort, he did it.
---最後の手段として彼はそれをした。
This is the last resort.
---これは最後の手段です。
I've got to go with the last resort.
---こうなったら最後の手段しかないな。
We could do it that way, but we should save it as a last resort.
---この方法でいいかもしれないが、これは最後の手段として取っておくべきだ。
I can't think of any other way but that.
I can find no alternative to it.
---それ以外に選ぶ道がない。
♠ 動詞resortには 「行楽地」以外に「・・に訴える、頼る」「手段を使う、助けを借りる」といった全く反対とも思える意味があります。
最後の手段になる前の、第2の手段、代替案などは、それぞれ、以下のような単語であらわすことができます。

♠ 「the court of previous resort」は最高裁判所を意味するのですが、普段この意味ではあまり使われません。
「もう彼しか残っていない」とあきらめムードで使います。

誘う

I asked him out for a movie.
---彼を映画に誘った。
I'm happy you took me out.
---誘ってくれてありがとう。
Give me a call at any time.
---いつでも誘って(連絡して)ね。
Why don't we have lunch?
---昼食にいかない?
♠ 人を誘う表現には幾つかあります。

Would you like to 動詞

1番下のWould you want toが「~しませんんか?」と
丁寧な言い方になりますが、それ以外はだいたい同じで
「~しない?~ってどう?」ぐらいの感覚になります。
超丁寧に言いたいのなら
Could you (would)?
Were you free tomorrow?
---明日もしかしたら暇な時間がありますかね?

最初から

I knew it all along.
---最初からわかっていたよ。
You have to do it from the beginning.
---最初からやり直し。
So you can't make it, then. You should have told me this from the start.
---じゃあ、無理なんだね。だったら最初からそう言ってくれよ。
I studied English again from scratch.
---私はまた最初から英語の勉強をした。
If boats frighten you, you should never have come in the first place.
---ボートが怖いなら初めから来なきゃよかったのに。

最初から最後まで(一気に)

She read the book from cover to cover at one sitting.
---彼女は本を最初から最後まで一気に読み通した。
♠ 本を最初から最後まで読み通す」と言う時には read the book through でもOK。
My eyes were riveted to the screen from start to finish.
---私の目は、最初から最後までスクリーンに釘付けだった。
OK!I will teach you from A to Z about it.
---OK! それについて最初から最後まで教えるよ。

誘いの受け答え

♠「~に行きたい? 」と聞かれ、「ぜひ行きたい」と言うとき。
Do you want to go to the movies tonight?
---Sure I'd like to.
---Of course, I want to do.
Would you like to go to the movies tonight?
---I'd love to.
---That would be nice.
Let's go to the movie tonight?
---It sounds good.
---Yeah, let's go.
♠「行きたくないとき」
I want to go, but I have a plan tonight.
I'm sorry, I can't.
Thank you for asking me, but I'm booked to go meeting tonight.
Sorry, I can't make it tonight.
I don't feel like going tonight.
I am afraid I can't make it tonight.
♠ いろんな言い方が存在します。いくつか「行きたい時」「行きたくない時」のお気に入りのフレーズを頭に入れておくと、とっさのときに簡単に答えられます。

ささくれ

Hangnails can be caused by dryness, nail-biting, cutting the cuticle, or from an injury.
---ささくれは乾燥、つめ噛み、あま皮のカット、怪我などが原因でなります。
I've got a hangnail.
---ささくれができちゃた。
