どこからともなく

When we were looking for him.

♠ From nowhere でどこからともなくです。

♠ come out of the woodwork/suddenly out of nowhereで「どこからともなく」

途方に暮れる

He is at a loss of what to do now.
Why don't you go and cheer him up?
---彼は今何をして言いか途方に暮れている。
---行って元気つけてあげたら。
♠ Be at a loss で途方に暮れる。
He didn't know (had any idea) what to do next.
---彼は次に何をしていいか途方に暮れていた。
♠ Be at the loss は古い言い方で現在口語では2番目の文が多く用いられる。
He is at his wit's end.

When their company went bankrupt, some of them were at a loss what to do next.

♠ For the time being には「さしあたり」「いまのところ」のような意味があります。
This beautiful weather will last for some time.

得意

He is good at English.
---彼は英語が得意だ。
Singing is not my thing.
---歌は得意ではない。

時が過ぎる

Time flies.
---時が過ぎるのはあっという間だね。
♠ 卒業式やお別れ会での定番表現。
Things will get easier as time goes by.
---時が過ぎるにつれ、物事は簡単になっていくよ。
♠ As time goes by で「時が過ぎるにつれ」です。go by は「~の近くを通る」をそのままの意味と「~の名で通っている」のが意味あります。
I'm chemo, but I go by jenny here.
(私はちえみですけど、ここではジェニーと言う名で通っています。)
♪昔の名前で出ていまぁす~♪←だれも知らない古い歌。

年を取る(老ける)

The overwork put years on him.
---その過労は、彼に年を取らした。
You are getting on a bit too.

年頃

同然・同様

♠ Amount toは通常「合計で~」などというときに良くしようされますが、 「結局~ということになる、要するに~ということになる、~を意味する」などとも使われます。

---彼に金をやるのは捨てたも同然だ。
♠ might as wellはこのまま覚えましょう。
「~する方がましだ、~するのと同じである、~するようなものだ、~するのも同様だ」と言いたい時に使える便利な言葉です。

特別待遇

学校から帰りの場合は、on the way from school

---途中のどこかで何かあったに違いない。
