英会話表現集 し

時代遅れ

This is out of date technology.
---これは時代遅れの技術だ。
♠ Her way of thinking about marriage is old-fashioned.
---彼女の結婚に対する考え方は古風(時代遅れ)だ。
That style has gone out of fashion.
---そのスタイルはもう時代遅れだよ。
Your idea is behind the times.
---きみの考えは時代遅れです。
♠ ちなみに、behind schedule は予定より遅れてですのでお間違いなく。

~したい気分

I don't feel like cooking tonight. let's eat out.
---今夜は料理したい気分じゃないな。外食しよう。
I feel like going out for a walk.
---外に散歩に行きたい気分だな。
I feel like a cup of tea.
---紅茶を飲みたい気分。
♠ feel like の後に続く動詞(verb)は~ing 型ですのでお間違いなく。
同様の表現に bring oneself to があります。
I couldn't bring myself to believe it.
---私はそれを信じることが出来ない。

主導権

Who wears the pants in his house?
---彼の家で主導権を握っているのはだれ?
♠ wears the pants で女が亭主を尻にひくという意味がありますので、答えは奥様です。

社交的

He is outgoing.
---彼は社交的です。
♠ outgoing のかわりに sociableも使えます。
He is unsociable.
---彼は社交的でない。
♠ out~にはいくつか有名な使い方があります。outspoken ですと「遠慮なくものを言う。」outstanding ですと「目立つ・未払い」となります。

徐々に

The student began to understand, Gradually.
---生徒は徐々に理解しはじめた。
♠ little by little / step by step / slowly / by degrees などが徐々にの意味でほとんど同様に使用できます。
厳密にこれらの意味の違いを言いますと、少しずつ/一歩一歩/ゆっくりと/一段一段/のような感じですが、その時の気分で使ってみてはいかがでしょうか。

実情

He certainly knows what's what.
---彼はほんとうに実情をよく知っている。
♠ what's what で「何が有益で大切なのか」という意味の口語表現になります。
She is not well up in the actual situation.
---彼女は実情に精通していない。
♠ well, up in(on)~ で~に詳しいとか精通しているとなります。

知らず知らすに

Tears trickled down my cheeks without knowing it, while I heard her tragic fate.
---彼女の悲惨な運命を聞いている内に、知らず知らずに内に涙がほおをつたわった。
♠ Without knowing it で知らずにとなります。少し硬い言い方ですので、before I knew it でも同じ感じになります。

実行する

They carried out the plan.
---彼らはそのプランを実行した。
They put the plan into practice.
They translated the plan into action.
---彼らはそのプランを実行に移した。
He always keeps his promises.
---彼はいつでも約束を実行する(守る)。
♠ put the plan into practice.translated the plan into action.は比較的に格式ばった言い回しです。

自慢

I'm proud of you.
---私は君が自慢だよ。(誇りに思う)
He always brags about his car.
---彼はいつも自分の車を自慢している。
She always boasts about her son.
---彼女はいつも息子の自慢をしている。
I'm sick of his bragging.
---彼の自慢話はうんざりだ。
♠ be proud of は普段から周りに自慢しているのではなく自分自身の心の中で誇りに思っている感じです。 boast about(of) は口に出して周りに自慢することです。
brag about は更に大げさにうそまで交えて自慢しまくる感じです。
I flatter myself that I'm the best English speaker in this class.
---自慢じゃないが、ぼくはこのクラスで一番英語が話せるよ。
♠ うむぼれの入った言い回しです。
Not to brag or anything, I can speak five languages.
---自慢するつもりはまったくないのですが、私は5国語話せます。
This is nothing to brag about.
---これはとても自慢できるものではない。

死ぬ

He died of cancer.
---彼はがんで死んだ。
♠ die は死ぬを言う意味で最も一般的な言い方。
He was killed in a car accident.
---彼は交通事故で死んだ。
♠ 事故や災害などで死んだときにいいます。
My father passed away ten years ago.
---私の父は10年まえに無くなった。
♠ 死ぬを言う言葉を婉曲的に表現するときにしようします。よく使われるので覚えましょう。
He died like a dog.
---彼は犬死した。
Do you believe in life after death?
---死後の世界って信じる?
He has been dead for two years.
---彼は2年前に死んだ。
♠ die と dead と取り違える人が多くいます。動詞と形容詞ですのではっきり頭の中で区別しておきましょう。
She murdered him with a knife.
--- 彼女は彼をナイフで殺した。
♠ 殺人による死に使います。

邪魔

Language doesn't get in the way.
---言語の違いは障害にならない。
♠ get in the way (of~) で~の支障になる。邪魔になる。
I'm sorry to disturb you, but may I ask you a question?
---お邪魔して申し訳ないのですが、質問してもよろしいですか?
Do not disturb them.
---起こさないで下さい。
♠ ホテルのドアノブに掛けるお決まりの看板。
Don't disturb yourself.
---お構いなく。
♠ 気を使ってあなた自身に邪魔になりませんように、と言う感じの決まり文句。
Get out of my way.
---通行の邪魔だからどけ。

叱る

Ths father scolded his daughter for being late.
---父親は娘を遅刻のことで叱った。
♠ scold は叱るの意味でもっとも一般的な言い方。
The teacher told off one of his students in front of everyone.
---先生はみんなのの前で生徒に1人を叱った。
♠ tell off は叱ると言う意味の口語的な表現。
That boy needs a good scolding.
---あの子はうんと叱らないと。

支払う

I paid for our dinner on a credit card.
---夕食の支払いはクレジットでした。
♠ 支払うの最も一般的な言い方pay for 物(~の支払い) pay 人(だれだれに支払う)。
She pays 40thousand yen for her apartment every month.
---彼女は毎月アパートに4万円払っている。
♠ pay 金額 for 物(~に~円払う)pay 人 円(だれだれに~円払う)
He forked out a pile to buy the house.
---彼はその家を買うために大金をいやいや払った
♠ fork out 《口語》〔...に〕(いやいや)金を出す, 支払う

時刻 ・時間

My watch doesn't seem to keep good time. Do you have the time?
---私の腕時計の時刻が合っていないのですが,何時か分かりますか?
♠ 「時刻が合っていない」は keep bad time となります。
Do you have the time? は時刻を尋ねる言い方。
Do you have time?「お時間ありますか」相手の都合を尋ねる言い方。
違えないように注意しましょう。このtheは非常に大切になります。

As time goes on, they have been forgotten by everyone.
---時が過ぎるに従い、彼らは忘れられていった。
♠ 月日を経るに従って、時が過ぎるに従って、時間が経つにつれて、時が経過{けいか}するにつれて

It will take a long time.
---それは時間が掛かるだろう。
Its time for dinner.
---夕食の時間ですよ。
The train arrived just on time.
---電車はちょうど時間通りに着いた。
I don't want to waste time.
---時間を無駄にしたくない。

小心者

He is a coward.
---彼は小心者(臆病)だ。
He is very timid with girls.
---彼は女性に対して小心物(内気)だ。

心配

Don't worry about it.it is not the end of the world.
---心配するなよ。この世の終わりじゃないんだから。
I'm a natural worrier.
---僕は生まれつきの心配性です。
Once you start worrying, there's no end to it.
---心配しだしたらきりがない。
I am anxious about his health.
I'm worried about his health.
I feel uneasy about his health.
I am concerned about his health.
---彼の健康を心配している。
♠ どれも心配となりますが、anxious/worryは大体同じ感覚で形容詞/動詞(名詞)の違いがありますのでご注意。
uneasyは、何か嫌な予感を含んでいます。 concernは日本語で「気に掛けている」ぐらいの感覚です。
He gave her financial help.
---彼は彼女に金の心配をしてやった。

国民の休日(national holidays)についてその英語表現を習いましょう。

1月1日元旦
New Year's Day.
一年の最初を祝う日
A day to celebrate the first-day od the year.

1月の第2月曜日成人の日
Coming of Age Day.
20歳の年を祝う日
A day to welcome the young men and women who have turned or will turn the age of 20 during the current year.

A student is what a teacher makes him.

新築

I gave him a clock as a housewarming present.

---新築中の(私の)家
♠ House Under Construction.で「新築中の家」と一塊の単語として使用されます。だれでも新築は嬉しいですのでこれに更にNew/Myを付けて言う人も沢山います。

十中八九

In all likelihood, Her success will continue for the time being.
---十中八九、彼女の成功は当分の間続くでしょう。
There's a strong likelihood that the matter will soon be settled.
---事態は十中八九すぐにおさまるでしょう。
♠ likelihoodで、ありそうなこと, 見込み, 可能性になります。
There isn't a chance of surviving a fall from that cliff.
---あの崖から落ちたら、十中八九助かるチャンスはない。
In nine cases out of ten, He will succeed.
---十中八九、彼は成功するだろう。
♠ In nine out of tenとすると、「10人中9人は」という意味になります。

仕方ない

It just can't be helped.
There is no help for it.
---それは仕方がないこと。
Did you make a big mistake again? You're hopeless.
---また失敗したの。仕方ない奴だ。

It's doesn't make any sense to say so after that.

♠ I'm brokeで「お金ががすっからかん。」I'm brokenだと「もうガタガタだ。」みたいな感覚ですので間違いなく。

---正直に言うと、僕の失敗だったんだ。
正直に言うとには、ほかにhonestly/speaking truthfullyなどもあります。
お好きなものを使い慣れてください。

地道な努力

If you want to improve your English skills. you need hardworking effort.
---英語の力を上達したいなら、地道な努力が必要だ。
Do everything step by step, and you will surely make it.
---地道になんでもしていけば、必ずできる。
He made an honest living.
---彼は地道に暮らしていた。

実践で

I can't communicate with foreigners well in actual situations.
実践では、外国人と良くコミュニケーションが取れない。
♠ 日本人の典型的なパターンです。どんなに難しい大学入試の英文が理解できても、日常の挨拶さえできません。
答えは簡単です。口から英語を発していないだけ、発したことがないだけです。自分が発せないものは聞いても当然聞き取れません。

sensitive と sensible「分別のある,思慮深い」
♠ sensitive と sensible「分別のある,思慮深い」は似ていますので混同しないように。

♠ strung はstring(ひも/糸)の過去分詞で、日本語にもあるように糸をピーンと引っ張ると緊張します。

四六時中

He has been studying day and night to be a lawyer.
---彼は弁護士になるために四六時中勉強している。
He has been working around the clock to finish it on time.
---彼はその仕事を時間内でおわらせるために一日中仕事をしている。
He has been working day and night.
---彼は、四六時中働いている。
He was chewing gum all the time I was talking.
---彼ははなしをしている間、ずっとガムをかんでいました。
♠ 四六時中は、「一日中/ずっと/いつも」などと日本語では同じ意味になります。

下取り

He traded in his car for a new one.
---彼は車を下取りに出して新車を買った。

---どんなテレビでも下取りOKです。
♠ よく見る店頭表示

英語で質問をする事は会話の基本です。
よく使う質問のパーターンを覚えておきましょう。

Canなどは過去形のCould にする事で丁寧な言い方になります。
